2008 Review - GFSN League
The 2008 calendar year has been a great one for the GFSN League, with the league getting more competitive and the standard of play improving right across the country.
Leicester Wildecats were undoubtedly the team of the year after they won all their league games, reached the GFSN Cup Final, and won the 2008 IGLFA World Championships Division 2.
However, they were pipped to the League Title in May by London Falcons who finished their first season in the league as champions, having conceded only 5 goals throughout the season.
But the new season didn’t start brightly for the Falcons in September 2008, as they were humbled 5-2 by Nottingham Ballbois at home, they succumbed to an away defeat at Leicester (4-1).
Village Manchester won the GFSN Cup, but withdrew from the league after finishing the 07/08 season in 8th. Hotscots FC replaced them, and started their first GFSN game with a storming 4-2 win against London Titans.
Nottingham Ballbois went from strength-to-strength, firstly they won the Leeds 5-a-side - followed quickly by the GFSN National Tournament in Liverpool. They started the new season by winning all their first 4 games, and are one of the 08/09 title favourites.
Yorkshire Terriers suffered a poor 2008 by their standards, despite reaching the GFSN Cup semi-finals, whilst Birmingham Blaze improved as the year went on and find themselves finishing the year third in the table.
The future looks bright for 2009, many new teams have expressed an interest in joining the league and the league champions for 08/09 looks like it will once again be extremely close.
Below is how the table would look IF the title was played from January - December!
* Blaze vs Yorkshire postponed, therefore have played one game less
** Village Manchester / Hotscots results combined across the year.
